At many of Canada's top retailers, they're committed to charging you the listed price every time. Since 2002, the Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code has been protecting consumers from incorrect price scans at the checkout. In order to avoid poor customer relations or legal sanctions, retail stores who follow this code offer items for free if they don't scan properly.
The code applies to all scanned Universal Product Codes (UPCs) as well as Price Look Up (PLU) goods. When an item scans in at a higher price than displayed or advertised by the store, the lower price will be honoured. In the event that the correct price is $10 or less, the customer will receive the product for free. If the item is priced higher than $10, the customer will receive a discount of $10 off the corrected price.
